Therapists are often daunted by the levels of anger and abuse that couples can express in sessions, making thoughtful exploratory work almost impossible. This workshop will explore ways of working with high conflict between couples and how lessons from mentalization-based therapy (MBT) may be useful for those working with couples and parents in a wide variety of settings.  Participants will be expected to bring case work.

This Foundation Course is designed for people interested in relationships and attachment and who come into contact with parents and couples through their work.  Both National Occupational Standards and the qualifications in 'Work with Parents' require that new and experienced workers can demonstrate knowledge of relationships between parents and how these affect their children, as well as show skills in working with them.

It will focus on thinking about couple relationships and the transition to becoming parents in the context of fostering and adoption; explore the impact of infertility on the couple, the experience of becoming parents in the context of loss, and explore the relationship dynamics during the assessment process.
