Who is couple psychotherapy for?
Present problems often reflect underlying difficulties from each partner’s experiences in earlier life. Couple psychotherapy aims to understand what lies behind current difficulties, paying attention both to conscious and unconscious factors, in order to bring about change.
Who will I see?
All psychotherapists in the service have substantial experience and have undertaken or are undertaking, further postgraduate training. They bring a wealth of clinical experience from a variety of related settings including social work and clinical psychology. Many have also trained to work with individuals in psychoanalytical psychotherapy, psychoanalysis or Jungian analysis. For your initial consultation and for ongoing psychotherapy you may see either one therapist or two therapists working together.
How do we work?
Every couple or individual approaching this service will have an initial consultation. This consists of one to three meetings with a couple psychotherapist, each lasting an hour and a quarter. During these meetings you will explore your difficulties and discuss with your psychotherapist how to proceed. Some couples are helped sufficiently by a few consultations but many will need further help. If this is so, you will be referred for couple psychotherapy or to other specialists within the Centre or outside it. You may come for consultation with your partner or on your own. Couple psychotherapy usually involves weekly sessions which take place at the same time every week. To begin couple psychotherapy both partners will need to attend.
What are the fees?
Couple consultation and psychotherapy is charged at a rate linked to income using a sliding scale. There is a fixed minimum fee but the level of the fee will be agreed with you at your initial appointment. You can find out about our current fee scale from the psychotherapy services administrator.
