Whilst the most recent figures seem to suggest that as the economy begins to recover unemployment is falling, we at TCCR know that job loss continues to be a painful and difficult issue for many families. Divorce rates for the unemployed are about twice as high as the national average showing that job loss is a serious challenge for many families.
Managing job loss is a difficult process that can impact on a couple. Challenging parts of a relationship that can be managed in relatively good times can become major fault lines when circumstances change for the worse. The partner of someone who is unemployed also has to face loss: for their partner's reduced status; for one less wage coming in; for their partner's dip in confidence; for the absence of space from each other. All these aspects of job loss are very hard for couples to talk about, particularly where one partner is still successfully working. In these circumstances a complicated web of guilt and jealousy can affect a couple's relationship making it hard to remember what you share and to speak honestly about how you feel.
